We are going to postpone this event for another date & time to be announced later****
end update….
Please join us in a United States of America Flag Retirement Ceremony Saturday June 22, 2024 at 6PM at our VFW Post 2423 in Indian Trail.
“A national flag that is worn beyond repair may be burned in a fire. The ceremony should be conducted with dignity and respect and the flag burned completely to ashes.”
If you have a flag or more to retire, please bring it whole and we will allow our Scouts to go through the VFW process, led by our Chartering Organization Representative Bill Lane. Feel free to bring as many as you can find that need to be retired: ask co-workers, neighbors, friends and family, a local business that may have a weathered/worn out flag. Flag Day is June 14th, and it would be a great time to replace worn out flags for our ceremony on June 22.
Preferably cloth flags only for the cremation, but if you have plastic or synthetic fabric flags, bring them also as there are other methods for retiring them in a dignified manner.
This is an outdoor event at the VFW. Please bring a water bottle. The VFW process involves cremation of the flag in the ceremony, so let’s stay up-wind of the smoke from the fire. Feel free to leave when you need to, we have 6-8PM blocked out just for time.
Prior to the event, please help explain to your Scout that this is a solemn and dignified event. They will participate in cutting the flag into specific pieces, which will likely be a shock to them.
A good read is attached in files, from U.S. Code Title 4: Chapter 1: § 8.
Hope to see you all there!
